Traditional Hessian Backed Lino
This battleship grey lino is hessian backed and suitable for use in relief printing with oil or water based inks. Carving easily with well sharpened tools the lino will snap off at the end of each stroke leaving a neat break. Sheets can be cut to size, shaped with a craft knife or scissors.
The texture and colour of the lino works well with both transfer paper and graphite paper for transfers and Linoprints can be both made by hand or with a press. If it is a cold day you can warm the lino to body tempreture with a heatpad or water bottle to make it easier to carve.
Printmaing Lino, also known as Battleship Gray Linoleum, is a natural product that artists have been using since the 1890's. Lino is made out of a mixture of linseed oil, natural rosin, sawdust, cork, wood ash and limestone on a Hessian backing, making it biogradable which means that your carvings and scrap lino can go into your compost or green waste, helping reduce the carbon footprint of your art!
Lino can be damaged through exposure to temperture extremes and become crumblery. Try to avoid soaking your lino when cleaning it as this can cause warping. Lino sheets are suitable for mounting to blocks for more stability when printing or can be used as is.
A light sanding of the lino surface is recommened to allow for ink to hold on the plate better.
The sheets come precut to 3 sizes: 150 x 150, 300 x 300, 450 x 450
