Japanese Shina Plywood Woodblock 4mm
These affordable Shina Plywood Plates are suitable for woodblock printing and soft enough to cut with lino tools. Plates measure 260mm x 360mm and are 4mm thick which means they can easily be cut down to smaller sizes if required.
The plates are also suitable for use as an alternative to canvas and artists can prime the surface of the wood or paint directly on to them in a variety of mediums.
Shina Pine is a sustainably grown and harvested softwood favoured for woodblocks especially in the Japanese Wood Block style Moku Hanga due to the ease in which it can be carved using both lino tools and wood block carving tools. It holds details very well, but can be prone to splintering and as it is so soft it can become dented and damaged easily, so it is best to practice prior to starting a project. When printed the Shina Pine has a fine, warm natural wood grain.
Most artists interested in wood block prints will progress to Japanese Wood Blocks, which are made of Japanese Magnolia Wood, a harder wood that requires more strength and precision in carving but is more durable and holds a very fine level of detail.
